I played around with my blank tags and Japanese washi tape, and created some pretty neat gift tags. These are super easy, and can be personalized as much as you want. So here is your DIY!

Supplies you will need:

Shipping tags with string (you can get these at any office supply store)

Japanese washi tape – assorted colors (you can get it online, on etsy and in some paper shops)

Pinking shears (available at every fabric store)

♥ Pens! (also stamps, glitter, stickers, or anything else you want to put on these)

Select your colors of washi tape (I recommend 2-3 colors, but show 2 here).

Take one of the tags and add your first color of tape. Wrap the top edge of the tape over the back of the tag. If you’re really concerned about how it looks on the back, you can trim it to be flush at the top, but I think the torn edges are charming and more handmade looking.

Add a second and third (if you are using three) piece of tape. I usually go horizontal or diagonal. Don’t worry if they overlap oddly at the bottom, as you will be trimming that with pinking shears anyhow. You can place your third strip, if you are using three colors, at a diagonal and it looks pretty cool — just leave yourself enough room to write on the tag.

Trim at about the bottom 1/3 of your horizontal tape, or even below it if you want. This gives it an interesting edge, and snips off the bottom bits of the tape if you think they look funky.

Now you just need to add any embellishments you want to — then write who it’s for, or what it contains, and you are done!

You can attach it to the gift by tying it to the ribbon or string, or by taping it to the gift with a little of your washi tape. I used both methods, and for the ones where I taped them I used one of the colors from the tag, so it’s all matching.
